All equipment is provided including tow float, hat, gloves and swim socks.

Session size is 12 maximum.

Swim course laid out with 200m and 500m loop.

Paddleboard safety cover and lifeguard in place.

1 hour Sea Swimming Club

The swim club provides local people and visitors alike a safe environment to practise and improve their open water swimming whilst having some fun and swimming in a sociable group.

Meet at the WeSup trailer on Torre Abbey Sands – you will see our flag.  You can leave bags with us whilst you swim.  Please note there are no changing facilities at the site and toilets are across the road in Torre Abbey Gardens.

We provide:

  • a course of set length (usually a 200m + 500m loop).
  • Safety cover on the water and on the shore.
  • A qualified swim coach for advice on technique and to provide support.
  • Session plans for all abilities.
  • Equipment that you can borrow.

How will I find the club?

Head for Toor Abbey Sands in Torquay.  We will be found half way along the beach – you will see our flag.

Where should I park?

There is paid parking on the road along the seafront.

Do I need to be able to swim fast?

You can swim at your own pace around the course using breaststroke or freestyle.  You just need to be aware of other swimmers and make space for them.

What will the session plans cover?

The daily plans help you improve on an aspect of your swimming stroke, working on your legs, arms, streamlining, endurance or speed.

How can I get help with my swimming?

The coach is available each morning to give you advice on the areas you want to improve.  One to one sessions are also available at other times.

How will the course be marked?

The course will be a triangle layout using 2 buoys and a flag which will be shore based.  the whole loop will be 500m long.  The 200m loop will be a “there and back” to the first buoy.

What to bring?

Swimming costumes and goggles if you want to use them.  There are goggles to borrow should you not have any.  A towel and warm clothes for after your swim.  A warm drink or money to buy a hot drink after your swim.


  • Swimming kit – costume, googles, towel
  • Swimming wetsuit recommended if you feel the cold or if its not the Summer.
  • Warm clothes for after your swim
  • Hot drink or money for a hot drink after.

What will be provided:

  • Swim course
  • Paddleboard safety cover
  • Lifeguard cover
  • Tow floats can be borrowed (this can store keys and a phone) and a swimming hat, gloves and socks.

Any borrowed equipment will be sanitised before and after use.
