RYA Power Intermediate

A two day course that covers the practical use of pilotage and passage planning by day on coastal waters, using both traditional and electronic navigational techniques.

The RYA Powerboat Intermediate course builds on the foundation knowledge of the Level 2 Powerboat Handling course and opens up exciting opportunities to venture further away to a new location, learning navigation and planning of trips plus more advanced boat handling skills.

It is also a good step up towards the Advanced Powerboat Course.

Course includes use of our RibQuest 6.5 metre RIB with 150hp outboard which is based in Torquay Marina. Fuelled certificate are included.

Our dedicated classroom is the perfect setting for the theory elements of the course with an array of teaching aids.

We limit our numbers on the course to ensure you have plenty of time on the helm with an experienced RYA instructor to guide you through. Ratio is 3 to 1.

You will finish the course able to plan and execute short coastal passages by day.

What is the minimum age?

The minimum age is 16 for the Intermediate Course.

How long is the licence valid?

Your licence will be registered with the RYA so the is always a record, there is no revalidation required.

Can I hire a boat using the licence?

Yes, but in Europe you are best gaining the International Certificate of Competence(ICC), this is just a paperwork exercise as you gain the ICC with your level 2 licence.

What type of boats can I drive?

You will be able to plan and execute short coastal passages by day.

  • Passport Photo for the licence
  • Lunch money or packed lunch, there are plenty of local places to get a bite
  • Small bag with extra layers, there is storage on the boat
  • Non slip or trainer style shoe
  • Waterproofs
  • Sun block and hat for those sunny days

The Perfect Place for Training

We are based in Torquay Marina and have training and changing facilities on site.  Torbay offers sheltered waters but also challenging places to practice basic navigation and tides. We can always find somewhere to complete the course – even in the most difficult of weathers.
