Introduction to Open water swimming 3 hr session

The session is a mixture of practical techniques for swimming open water and sound advice on how to stay safe and enjoy yourself.

Once we have made everyone comfortable in the classroom, we will cover important practical aspects of getting you started in sea swimming including kit, safety, what to expect and coping with the water.

Then we will make our way to Beacon Cove (which is a 5 minute walk from the classroom) and get ready to swim.

We will go through the art of putting on a wetsuit and acclimatising to the water.  Once in the water, we will look at various swimming techniques and take a leisurely swim along the coast.  The group will be accompanied by a safety paddleboarder.

Contact us if you would like to book a private course for up to 6 people.

Who is this session suitable for?

Beginners trying out open water swimming.

Swmmer’s must be 12 years old and be able to swim 400m in the pool unaided.

Where do we meet?

You will be met by your instructor at the Ocean Adventures Trailer by the entrance to the marina and take to the Torquay Watersports classroom for a short informative session.

Where do we swim?

The practical session will be from Beacon Cove which is a 5 minute walk from the classroom. The Cove is sheltered and has beautiful views over Torbay.

Where can I get changed?

There are no changing rooms or toilets available at Beacon Cove.  However most people are happy to change under a large towel in a sheltered area at the cove, or arrive with their swimming costume under their clothes.  The classroom will have a toilet.

Can I leave my bag on the beach whilst I swim?

Tow floats provided will have space for keys and small valuables.  We will leave some possessions on the beach.  TQWS can not be held responsible for any personal items left on the beach.

How far will we swim?

Depending on the group and the water we will be in the water for up to 45 minutes.  From beacon Cove it is possible to swim around the Mill Stone Rocks, to the caves under the imperial hotel and across to Peaked Torr Cove.  If time allows, we might be able to swim to London Bridge – a natural sea arch about 800m along the coast.
