This essential one day First Aid course is for anyone that gets afloat

As the skipper of a vessel you have a responsibility to be able to care for your crew. The one day RYA First Aid course is run by experienced RYA instructors with a good appreciation of medical care afloat and develops the confidence and ability to perform basic first aid when on the water – an essential course for everyone.

The syllabus is based on the recommendations of the Health and Safety Executive and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. The certificate fulfils the requirements of the MCA Code of Practice for the skippers of small commercial vessels up to category 2 and for all RYA practical instructors.

The course is a mixture of theoretical and practical, covering all the usual first aid subjects but from a boating perspective.

You will cover:

Bone breaks and splinting
Bleeding and bandaging
Burns
Hypothermia
Drowning
Resuscitation
Category C First Aid Kits
Using a defibrillator

And much more.

What’s the minimum age?

The guide minimum age is 12 years old. We have based this on the physical aspects of administering CPR. 12-16 year olds must be accompanied by an adult.

How long is the licence valid?

Your licence will be registered with the RYA and is valid for 3 years.

How many will be on the course?

We like to limit our courses to a maximum of 8 to ensure we have plenty of time to cover everything and to allow you lots of hands on time for the practical elements of the course.

Do I need any prior experience?

No prior experience is needed at all.

Lunch money or packed lunch, there are plenty of local places to get a bite
Notepad and pen

Although this is aimed at personnel going afloat – this will equally suit anyone wanting to get First Aid qualified.

  Went with my wife on the costal tour and we both really enjoyed it.

Once the safety stuff is done we went out on a route selected by the guide - we had Greg.  

Started out nice and slow but then outside the harbour it  can go a bit quicker and the boat is nippy skipping over the waves which we loved. Weather was good which helps and the little bit of spray was exhilarating.  

Route goes on a tour of the bay and saw the interesting landmarks and got a lot of historic information about them.  Highlight has to be seeing dolphins jumping up and swimming alongside.  

Can’t praise the guide, Greg enough he had a superb knowledge of the area and knew exactly where to go to see the dolphins and other wildlife.  There was no clock watching and spent well over the allocated time which was wonderful and extra value for money on an already great price.  

Greg was fun and chatty but also professional and we had no worries regarding safety.  His enthusiasm was great to experience and it was fantastic to see someone who loves their job so much.  

Next time we’re in Torquay we’ll definitely do another of these tours - or maybe the fast one.
