The RYA Essential Navigation + Seamanship Course is a useful course for anyone on the water – whether you are a sailor, motor boater, sea angler, diver or boat master.

Suitable for complete beginners as an introduction to navigation and safety.

You can complete the modules in one sitting or over a period of time; you simply need a computer and the internet.

A useful course for beginners, those who want a step up from the Powerboat 2 Course or as a stepping stone for those wishing to get their Advanced Powerboat Course or Day Skipper Theory/ Yacht Master Theory.

The RYA Essential Navigation + Seamanship is a great introduction to navigation and safety or anyone new to boating.

During the online course you will cover:

  • Charts and Publications
  • Safety
  • Engine Checks
  • Buoyage
  • Tidal Awareness
  • Visual and Electronic Navigation
  • Pilotage
  • Rules of the Road
  • Anchoring
  • Weather Forcasts
  • Passage Planning

The online course can be worked through at your own pace and takes approximately 8-10 hours.

Our instructors are on hand to provide any additional support should it be needed.

 

Once you have purchased the course we will need to enrol you on the RYA interactive site.  Please do allow us time to complete this.

We will need your postal address to send you the RYA course pack.
Once you’ve received the pack you’re ready to start learning at your own pace.
Know that we are on hand any time you may need support.

How long is the licence valid?

Your licence will be registered with the RYA so there is always a record, there is no revalidation required.

How long do I have to complete the course?

You have 6 months to complete the course.  It can be achieved in 8- 10 hours.

Is there a minimum age?

No – there is no age restriction for this course.  We would recommend a minimum age of 12 years.

Is there an assessment at the end?

No – the modules work on a “learn it, practise it, test it” basis.  That way as you work through the modules you are continually learning and being assessed.  If you struggle with a module – just simply run it again.

What do I get with the course?

We will send you the RYA Essential Navigation and Seamanship Theory Course pack which includes RYA Training Charts and a set of plotter and dividers.  You will also get a course completion certificate.

This course can also take place with us in a classroom setting.  Please get in touch to discuss dates and possible options.  One on one instructing is also available.
